Landing in Phu Quoc: your first 24 hours, sorted
Everything to set up before you board, the real prices for getting into town, and the three tricks people fall for at PQC.

before you fly
Three things to do at home
-

Install an eSIM so you have data the moment you land
You need data for Grab, maps and messaging. Installing at home means no SIM counter queue and no upselling at the airport.
-

Get your e-visa from the official site only
Check whether your nationality is visa-exempt first. If you need one, the 90-day e-visa costs USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry on the government portal. Agent sites charge more for the same visa.
-

Landing late or with kids? Book your ride now
In high season, Grab cars can be scarce after 7 pm, with waits of 10–15 minutes. A pre-booked car means a driver with your name at the gate and a price fixed in advance.
Which eSIM for your trip?

You’ll need roughly 4.9 GB for your trip. This is an estimate; heavy video use can double it.

PQC to Duong Dong: every option
heads up
Scams to skip at PQC
Airport touts
People who approach you in arrivals often quote two to three times the real fare. Use the taxi rank, the meter or an app.
Fast meters and look-alike cars
Fake cars copy the Vinasun and Mai Linh colors, and some meters climb too quickly. If the meter races, stop and pay for the distance covered.
Your passport as a scooter deposit
Rental shops may ask to keep your original passport. Offer a USD 20–50 cash deposit or a copy instead.
Your first day in Phu Quoc
-
Carry small notes
Drivers may not have change for a 500,000 VND note on a short ride. Break big notes at a shop or ATM first.
-
Plan your ride to the south
Sunset Town and the southern beaches are about 25 km from the airport, and VinBus does not go there. A taxi costs about 200,000–350,000 VND.
-
Keep your e-visa approval letter offline
Immigration may ask for it. Save a PDF or screenshot, because you may not have data in the queue.
Want a plan for day one? An island-hopping boat trip in the south or a ride on the Hon Thom cable car is an easy way to start your time on Phu Quoc.
